It's the birthday today of Prof David Crystal. Anyone who has taught English language at any level will know how influential he has been as an explainer of linguistics. Here, for example, is a piece on the quirks of English spelling. David - thank you. buff.ly/3RZbyo9

GOOD MORNING to everyone who woke up pre-6am on the first day of their summer hols. Who are already, up and dressed and currently trying to unravel their overstimulated brains to figure out what cleaning/DIY task to do first!

"hey, that 'diverse' selection for your classroom/library/shortlist has no fun, story-driven disability rep in it at all--" she begins to type, then stops because, ultimately, they know, they just don't care. many kids are living with a disability. act like it. acknowledge it.

Teachers are getting a well-deserved pay rise. The Conservatives left the profession overstretched and undervalued. We said we’d change that, and we meant it.

please know that when you tell me you "loved a kind of spark" & that it "taught you so much", but go on to say that people like Miss Murphy don't exist and "that would never happen", the 11 year old in me dies. she's not a commentary on teaching. she's a commentary on ableism.

Word of the day is ‘kuchisabishii’, from Japanese: boredom eating, or the making of frequent visits to the fridge in the hope of finding something new to munch on. Its literal translation is ‘lonely mouth’.

Current GCSE exam unreliability 1. Impacts on students & their futures 2.Impacts on HoDs stress levels, the very people schools are desperate to keep in a retention crisis 3. Involves a vast amount of admin for HoDs, reviewing scripts, writing reports for SLT etc Not acceptable.

The #Vikings loved giving kittens & cats as wedding gifts. Not only were they thought to be invaluable to brides setting up their new homes, but they were also sacred to Freya, the Scandinavian goddess of love, whose chariot was pulled by two giant cats. #WyrdWednesday #cats
