New paper by sean reardon and CEPA colleagues predicts variation in math gender gaps across US districts. Math gap favors boys more in districts with higher SES or when male-female SES gap is bigger. Not so for ELA. Possible stereotype effects. cepa.stanford.edu/content/gender…

Nice policy point by Jon Freeman about LGBTQ diversity in science "Diversity programmes to develop the scientific workforce at both the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) consistently leave out LGBTQ people." nature.com/articles/d4158…

Important new work by @michaeljkieffer and Karen Thompson on accounting for progress of multilingual children. In common ed accountability, reclassification from EL to fluent English proficient cream-skims away progress made by part of group. Need to design better systems. x.com/michaeljkieffe…

Please see Jon's tweet and link below, then ask leaders in higher education, National Academy members, and organization leaders to sign the letter by August 12. Help increase (and measure) LGBT visibility at the university level. 🏳️‍🌈

Sarah Lubienski's essay on writing proposal reviews applies to journal reviews too: 1. focus on the main point(s) 2. be blunt, but constructive 3. be consistent (not repetitive) in comments to the authors and chair/editor AERA Educational Researcher - Editors journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.31…

New paper! Findings: *Very low-achieving men choose math-intensive college majors as often as high-achieving women. *During college, these men are retained in and join these majors. *Extensive set of student factors cannot explain this. Science Magazine science.sciencemag.org/content/368/64…

I may be biased 😍 but this paper is AMAZING. Here's just one of the many mind-boggling statistics: "males at and below the 1st percentile are majoring in [physics, engineering, and CS] at the same rate as females at the 80th percentile of STEM achievement" 🤯

Your mid-pandemic reminder that the gender (and gender-by-race) inequities in education and society pre-pandemic will likely be there post-pandemic. And this one is bad for the quality of STEM fields too.
