Inspired by the very excellent Victoria Derbyshire on #Newsnight last night challenging the narrative on asylum backlogs, here is the same logic applied to the NHS elective and diagnostic waiting list.

BREAKING: NHS waiting list hits new record high of 7.8 million, latest data reveals. Rise in list size was smaller than recent months - up 26k between Aug & Sept. However, it still means list has grown every month since PM made pledge in Jan to have waiting list reducing by 2024

Latest trajectory of the long wait cohorts - to give some context to the slight improvements in 52/65 weeks for September's data. Target by March 2024 for the latter has been looking unlikely for a while of course.

NHS leaders have supported much of the direction of travel signalled by Wes Streeting including his emphasis on shifting more care to the community, focusing on population health outcomes and the huge potential of digital and technology to improve care. 1/ 10
