Strong to severe storms are on tap for parts of the northeast later today, as a potent system moves east. Along with the risk for damaging wind gusts and some flooding, it turns quite hot and humid. Many along the I-95 break 90 degrees, with heat indices pushing 100 for some.

A look at reports across the area shows widespread downed trees, branches, and wires. This also includes a six-story building under construction that collapsed near the intersection of 19th Street NE and H Street NE in DC. Power outages in both VA/MD are approaching 350K.

This...isnt a good thing. New isn't always better. "In detailed blind (i.e., model labels were hidden) subjective and objective assessments, significant issues were identified in RRFS that degraded forecast quality." journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/…

The official NOAA "budget request" to Congress (which is a detailed version of the "President's Budget" would be devastating, and basically end all research and development. Purportedly, the proposal moves a lot of weather research and development under NWS, but doing so while

I’ve seen a lot of comparisons between Ashby 2020 and Gary 2025, both before the event and after - I think it’s safe to say that Gary beats Ashby by quite a fair margin, both from the actual tornado to the meteorological setup itself (see the tornadoes that happened before Gary

Did you know that Thomas Jefferson observed the weather conditions and wrote them in a journal? According to his data, the temperature at 1pm in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776 was 76°. The picture below is from a page in his journal!

A much needed break from the active weather pattern is in store! A pleasant night will lead into a pleasant Saturday. There will be a high risk of dangerous rip currents at all area beaches tomorrow, so extreme caution is advised for beachgoers. #NJwx #DEwx #MDwx #PAwx
