The weather cleared up today and we were able to get out on our first science flight! Here we are at 300ft over the Arctic Ocean north of Svalbard (82°N), over the marginal ice zone – look at those spectacular melt ponds British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Reading Meteorology UEA School of Environmental Sciences

First research flight for Hannah Croad. Too much low cloud to measure low-level fluxes, but good sampling of boundary layer wind shear over marginal ice. With cyclones in the forecasts, she's looking forward to flying again! research.reading.ac.uk/arctic-summert… Reading Meteorology UEA School of Environmental Sciences British Antarctic Survey 🐧

An cyclone is located to the south of Svalbard and the team is getting ready to fly through it. They will take important measurements to understand the structure of a low-level wind maximum associated with it. research.reading.ac.uk/arctic-summert… Reading Meteorology UEA School of Environmental Sciences British Antarctic Survey 🐧 National Centre for Atmospheric Science

This is us! Arctic SummerTime Cyclones is a Natural Environment Research Council project and a great collaborative effort, with scientists from Reading Meteorology UEA School of Environmental Sciences British Antarctic Survey 🐧 (and their pilots!) National Centre for Atmospheric Science CPOM. We are flying through the heart of Arctic storms to understand how they affect polar sea ice

It is pretty exciting to be flying at low levels over sea ice as part of our Arctic SummerTime Cyclones field campaign. We’re looking at how these summertime cyclones interact with the ice UEA School of Environmental Sciences Reading Meteorology British Antarctic Survey 🐧

Intrigued by sea ice? For ReadingCAN join Prof John Methven from Uni of Reading to hear about the Arctic Summer-time Cyclones project - flying small research airplanes through Arctic cyclones. 🛩️ This Thursday 20 June, 17:30 - 18:30, free, book here: rdguk.info/arctic_6h6tB
