Pleased that the Gauke Review talks the language of the Corston Review of women in CJ ( without mentioning it ) . But HMPPS has had 20yrs to innovate in this sector- difficult to see it starting now.

A reminder that purposeful activity isn’t delivered well in a lot of prisons at the moment. Last year HMI Prisons published a report showing of 38 adult prisons they visited, more than half received the lowest grade of poor, and only one had improved.

HMI Prisons The same report showed that in reception prisons, half of all prisoners spent more than 22 hours in their cell every day, including on a weekday

Hats off to the MoJ which has played a blinder today diverting much of the conversation post Gauke review to the mandatory castration of sex offenders.

About half of all prisoners didn’t get a single qualification at school. If we are linking sentencing with education, we can’t just expect all prisoners to have the skillset to engage in education. If we aren’t proactive, this policy will only help those who need it the least

Why mandatory chemical castration will never happen in the UK and how it was used by the government as a cynical dead cat strategy to distract from hugely unpopular measures to release killers and rapists: thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

Simply throwing money at a failing service model will achieve nothing. ⁦Shabana Mahmood MP⁩ remains silent on her party’s promise: “Labour will conduct a strategic review of probation governance, including considering the benefits of devolved models.” theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Juggling people between community and custody may help with numbers in the short term - long term we need an effective prison and probation service - too little discussion on that. Listen to ⁦HM Inspectorate of Probation⁩ ⁦HMI Prisons⁩ theguardian.com/society/2025/m…

Sentencing Review with no impact assessment on police according to Mark Rowley - shows how badly served is Shabana Mahmood MP by the officials she keeps promoting

John Podmore (@john_podmore) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Given that the Perm Sec of the MoJ was recently promoted to PS at the Home Office and the DG/CEO of the prison & probation service was promoted to PS at the MoJ, Mark Rowley saying there was no consultation about the Gauke review is absolutely extraordinary. #‘Yes Minister’

Anyway, off now to another day in a crumbling court in a broken criminal justice system, to sit with weeping victims of crime and tell them their case - already 5 years old - can’t go ahead. Creating this chaos and then cosplaying as a vigilante does not make you tough on crime

📣♾️📣 2 deaths last weekend in London were from pills confirmed as #nitazenes & similar to pills tested by The Loop. They looked like oxys BUT it is not known what they were bought as. Take care whatever pills you take. Carry #naloxone, check in on friends & test if you can.

I hope HMPPS has a strategy for #nitazenes . It’s all gone quiet since HMP Parc where #nakoxone was issued to staff. Nothing forthcoming from the public sector.

Good to see a prison doing well - a Governor there for 5 years must help but the absence of ROTL and high recall rates question the underlying purpose.

Robert Jenrick This post by Jenrick, who is supposed to be Shadow Justice Secretary, is particularly disgraceful. As a lawyer, I am sure that he has in his time represented the interests of clients who he either found unpleasant or disreputable. Maintaining the rule of law and our freedoms
