While rates of remote work have declined since early in the pandemic, the average Bay Area employee still worked from home approximately one-third of their time in 2024. Rates of remote work have been consistently higher in the Bay Area than in other major U.S. regions.

More than 94 million pounds of potential food waste was recovered in Silicon Valley between 2019-2023 and given instead to people in need. Surplus food recovery has been on the rise in recent years, receiving a boost in 2021 from pandemic-related funding.

Income inequality is significantly higher in Silicon Valley than in California or the U.S., and the gap is growing. Since the Great Recession, regional household income inequality has expanded twice as quickly as in the state or nation as a whole and hit a record high in 2022.

Silicon Valley’s economy expanded by 3.9% last year, slightly outpacing its average of the past two decades and strongly outpacing year-over-year growth in the U.S. (+2.6%). This marked the second straight year of growth in the region following an economic contraction in 2022.

Commercial space occupied by some of the region’s largest tech companies has plateaued as many adjust to remote and hybrid work. Total space occupied by these tenants has not grown significantly since 2021, after more than quadrupling over the previous eight years.

Childcare costs in Silicon Valley have doubled over the past decade and tripled since 2003, far outpacing the rate of inflation. The average cost of childcare for an infant in Silicon Valley is now more than $31,200 each year — 50% higher than the California average.

Evictions in Silicon Valley have increased 130% over the past two years. The number of unlawful detainer evictions - where a tenant loses the right to stay in a property - has increased across California since the lifting of a pandemic-era moratorium, in July 2022.

Silicon Valley patent activity hit an all-time high in 2024. More than 23,000 utility patents – granted to protect new inventions – were issued in the region last year, accounting for 16% of the U.S. total. As of Q3, the top recipients were Apple, Google, and Intel.

As of 2023, 41% of Silicon Valley residents were foreign-born – the highest share on record going back to the mid-1800s. Silicon Valley has a significantly higher share of foreign-born residents than San Francisco (35%), California (27%), or the United States (14%).

Silicon Valley's largest tech employers increased their Bay Area headcount by 27% since the beginning of 2019. However, they have expanded much faster elsewhere, growing U.S. headcount by 50% and global headcount by 66% over the same time period. siliconvalleyindicators.org/data/economy/e…

More than half (53%) of Silicon Valley residents speak a language other than English at home — more than twice the national rate (22%). Compared to the U.S., these households are less likely to speak Spanish and more likely to speak Chinese, Vietnamese, or Tagalog.
