I finished Middlemarch today. What a magnificent achievement; the final words are a peerlessly wise & humane philosophy of life. I’ve never seen the much-lauded 1990s BBC adaptation, which is on iPlayer. Grateful for advice on whether I should watch it.

I am obsessed with Robert Jenrick’s wife. She looks like she should be starring opposite Keira Knightley in a drama set in the 1800s where she plays a devious lady-in-waiting to a scandal-prone aristocrat

🌟Structure🌟When I talk about text structure, and how to write about it, I find myself saying this stuff a lot. Contrast is a gift, and can be leveraged to make interesting points. I can't think of anything I've read, set text or unseen, that doesn't have some kind of contrast.

Why boys don't read* - a story in microcosm... My 11-year-old son loves reading. He's into sport, gaming, TV etc. but hoovers up books. He races through YA fiction, so I've started him on some classics from my bookshelves, which he's really enjoyed... >

A stunning essay in the FT on the international decline in the ability to read, reason, focus, and learn new things. It began or accelerated in the early 2010s. It's hitting teens AND adults. Self-report and objective scores. by John Burn-Murdoch ft.com/content/a8016c…

adolescence on netflix has convinced me that children should not legally be allowed smartphones and that one day we’ll look back on the fact that we allowed it and be really ashamed 😭

You could ban smartphones for under 16s. It’s something I can’t help but feel we will look back on as ‘crazy we did this so late’.

🧵 We’ve all heard it: the more you know, the easier it is to learn. But a recent experimental study puts that claim to the test and the results aren’t what you’d expect. researchgate.net/publication/38…

“School is not meant to reflect back a child’s existing world. It is meant to offer new worlds. It is meant to take the child by the hand and lead them to places they never knew existed, places beyond their postcode, places they have every right to belong.” Spot on. 👏
