I went to Iraq and all I did was lose a war and grow a mustache. Mara Revkin @mararevkin.bsky.social's been there for a roughly equivalent amount of time and she's written a stunningly good job market paper, all while doing painstaking and important work on behalf of vulnerable refugees. Hire her!

Really looking forward to presenting a new working paper coauthored with Benjamin Krick & Jonathan Petkun, "The Civilian Cost of Casualty Aversion: Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Iraq" DukePoliticalScience's SPC workshop on Feb. 9: polisci.duke.edu/events/spc-wor…

Had an excellent time presenting and getting feedback on work with Mara Revkin @mararevkin.bsky.social and Jonathan Petkun at the Carolina Conflict Consortium hosted by Appalachian State.

Excited to share my new article with Megan Stewart Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy & Jonathan Petkun Duke Law in the July/August issue of Foreign Affairs: foreignaffairs.com/united-states/…

Really proud of this short new piece with Megan Stewart Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy & Mara Revkin @mararevkin.bsky.social Duke Law, out now in Foreign Affairs. The stakes are high, and we try to engage other viewpoints with a ton of respect & care. foreignaffairs.com/united-states/…

Grateful to our research partners IOM South Sudan for a productive and humbling 2 weeks seeing one of the most severe & complex humanitarian crises in the world—one that is not getting nearly as much international attention & aid as it needs (a $1.2B funding gap). Thread ... 1/5

Really grateful to Emily S. Bremer for engaging with our piece and for this very thoughtful review! We still have time for edits, so feedback is most welcome!

In June, Mara Revkin @mararevkin.bsky.social, Jonathan Petkun, and I wrote for Foreign Affairs about what a progressive internationalist foreign policy might look like and how restraint and retrenchment are necessary for progressive outcomes in some domains but counterproductive in others.

Thanks Juba Echo TV for covering our Duke Law-IOM South Sudan research partnership! Excited to share a new open-access article with Benjamin Krick & Jonathan Petkun in International Organization: "Civilian Harm & Military Legitimacy" cambridge.org/core/journals/…. This project started in 2018 Mosul, Iraq’s 2nd largest city, in the aftermath of a 9-month battled described at the time...1/7
