I was honored to be part of the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission in both rounds of the #TurkeyElections this month. The preliminary statement from the mission highlights the lack of a level playing field and media bias: bit.ly/3ovxD2a

TV is the continuation of politics by other means. Like war, TV is full of villains. In authoritarian states, TV shows depict threats to promulgate regime legitimacy and vilify opposition. Here, resemblance of a "capitalist" villain to jailed philanthropist Kavala is undeniable

My co-authored piece on Turkey's presidential elections with Sebnem Gumuscu is now out Journal of Democracy. We discuss how thanks to an uneven playing field, Erdoğan prevailed with an ethnoreligious discourse against a weak and uncoordinated opposition alliance. journalofdemocracy.org/articles/how-e…

In this paper, Jonas Bergan Draege draws upon an original dataset of interventions in the Turkish Parliament around the 2013 Gezi Protests to suggest a novel mechanism through which opposition parties respond Oslo New University College tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

🚨New results from online survey in Tunisia: I tested whether people are afraid to report opposition to Kais Saied. Turns out this is true--at least 20% (!!) of the population does not support him but will not report it on surveys. Opposition to him is likely 50% or even higher.

Level of partisan hostility varies substantially between democracies. Showcase: How many think that threatening outparty supporters online is acceptable? 🇧🇷Brazil & 🇺🇸USA top the list at ~26%. 🇸🇪Sweden is lowest at ~6%. Source: CONAP dataset (2022). #dataviz #polarization

Using experiments, we uncover divergent effects on government supporters and opponents: supporters experience increased group belonging and are inclined to engage in pro-government activities, while opponents feel more anger and anxiety, deterring them from protesting (3/7)

Happy to share even more research on propaganda (osf.io/x7cav/), this time accepted work forthcoming in Journal of Peace Research. Karsten Donnay and I explore how citizens in the crisis-ridden regime of 🇻🇪 perceive overt “hard” propaganda. #Propaganda #Autocracy #Venezuela (1/7)

Scholars classify Turkey's regime as competitive authoritarian where the playimg field is tilted in favor of incumbent and elections are neither free nor fair. Opposition victory does not render democratic legitimacy to Erdoğan but in such regimes opposition can beat the odds.

I was thrilled to discuss politics in Syria and Turkey, the role of the opposition under authoritarianism, and the effect of propaganda videos with Alaa Sami in this podcast. It was challenging to do so in Arabic, but I hope the main points landed😌 youtube.com/watch?v=Fk1jEe…

Continued interruption of the entry of aid and fuel supplies at the #Rafah crossing will halt the critical humanitarian response across the #GazaStrip The catastrophic hunger faced by people especially in northern #Gaza will get much worse if these supply routes are interrupted.

My comments on media instrumentalizations of history in Turkey recap: "Regime-produced videos link past victories to their contemporary custodian: RTE as rightful and necessary, leader and defender." Interested? Attending APSA? Jonas Bergan Draege and I present our paper on Saturday
