Huge congratulations to Anna Hemnes, who on Monday was awarded the Elsa Hanigan (endowed) Chair in Pulmonary Medicine. Well deserved. I was waiting for someone else to tweet this, so I could retweet, but it's been a couple of days. @VUMCLung

#CCR23: In the DEVICE trial, the use of video laryngoscopy in critically ill patients undergoing intubation in the ED or ICU resulted in a higher incidence of successful intubation on the first attempt than direct laryngoscopy. nej.md/43H2t79

The results from our DEVICE trial are out in the NEJM . In this RCT, direct laryngoscopy was inferior to video laryngoscopy for first-pass success. In fact, it was so inferior that we had to stop the trial early after DSMB review due to the clear benefit of VL. This is the 🔨

Miss the Pragmatic Critical Care Research Group DEVICE trial, presented by Matthew Semler & Matthew Prekker at the Critical Care Reviews Meeting #CCR23 last week? It was simultaneously published in NEJM doi.org/10.1056/NEJMoa… Here, the trialists briefly explain the results

Presented at #CCR24: In a randomized trial involving critically ill adults undergoing tracheal intubation, the incidence of hypoxemia was lower with preoxygenation with noninvasive ventilation than with an oxygen mask. Full PREOXI trial results: nej.md/45lC0xt

Awesome to have Dr. Seitz join us to talk about MODE and the upcoming MODEM trials. Ventilators have many different modes, and while we often spend time understanding how each mode works, understanding how different modes might affect our patients and outcomes is more difficult.
