"Arguments [against cameras] are a mix of embarrassing & irrelevant. If justices & lawyers can’t control themselves, then that’s on them. And concerns about what people do w/ [video] don’t outweigh the public’s right to that information" msnbc.com/deadline-white… by Jordan Rubin

As Jordan Rubin wrote last week, the very composition of the panel is "a bad sign for abortion rights"--and that's putting it mildly. Ho, the former SCOTUS clerk, TX Solicitor General, and prospective future nominee, is brilliant, genial, & a sworn enemy of abortion access. 6/

Jordan was able to uncover 1000 pages of legal documents on an important historical analog case concerning the drug alpha-ethyltryptamine, which I've attached to the podcast.

Thanks A Public Affair 🎙️ for a terrific interview w/ University of California Press (is on Bluesky) author Jordan Rubin about new book, BIZARRO, and one of the central questions it seeks to answer: do you have a right to know that something is illegal before you’re arrested, charged, and sentenced? wortfm.org/synthetic-cann…

Really helpful explainer on section 793, willful retention of classified docs vs 794, delivering those docs to a foreign gov. Espionage Act charges, which Trump could face, cover more than 'spying' msnbc.com/deadline-white… via @msnbc

BREAKING: After more than 28 years on Arizona's death row, Barry Jones was just resentenced to time served. He should be released shortly. Jones's case was at the heart of the 2022 SCOTUS ruling Shinn v. Ramirez, which reinstated his conviction despite evidence of his innocence.

Jordan Rubin could not agree more. It’s 2023. even if you don’t support cameras in the courtroom (I do), it’s hard to justify the “need” to wait until October to release the audio.

Great review of Bizarro: "Rubin, a former narcotics prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, has written a period-defining study of federal drug prosecutions at the beginning of the synthetics boom." ". . . . meticulously annotated and chilling."

"For the average American, the phrase 'Florida drug kingpin' is more likely to evoke cocaine-slinging Cubans or meth-cooking bikers. . . .[Bizarro] is every bit as compelling as a more Scarfacian tale."

The Federal Analogue Act is one of the most confusing laws in the history of American drug policy and Jordan Rubin wrote a great book about it, you can listen to our discussion for free here: youtu.be/tq_8LPFBzKU?si…

Another potential issue, as flagged by my colleague Jordan Rubin? The Federal Tort Claims Act expressly disallows punitive damages. It's not clear to me how Trump gets around that re: his claimed $100 million in punitives, although I am happy to be educated. FIN.
