#le710inter

What could a Franco-German "Grand Bargain" on European defense look like? As Merz travels to Paris today, Shahin Vallée and I have put the pieces together for Le Grand Continent . geopolitique.eu/en/2025/05/05/…

Thanks for the feedback. But unlike say 3 years ago, isn't there now a shared assessment of threats at least as regards Russia? In that context, its striking that the coalition of the willing is led by the UK and FR together with the northern and central Europeans you mention.

When Britain asked its American colonies to pay more for their defense, it sparked a revolution and independence. As the US now tries to shift the costs of its empire, Joseph de Weck and Jeff Rathke argue that it should consider the consequences: americangerman.institute/2025/05/the-am…

A successful European rearmament implies more welfare state, not less, funded by higher coprorate tax within a European framework. A very lucid article by Joseph de Weck and Shahin VALLEE theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Europe would be drawing the entirely wrong lessons from history if it weakened the welfare state to build up the military state. And why Europe cannot achieve better defence without better tax revenues. 👉 Op-ed with Shahin Vallée theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

The problem is not the lack of a strategic culture or the EU being a collection of 27MS - there is QMV for trade. The problem is Europe's / Ukraine's dependence on the US for defense. You can't win a game of chicken on trade if Washington can escalate on defense.

Does Trump's EU humiliation come down to Erich Fromm's "Escape from Freedom"? Europe prefers the certainty of submission to confronting its existential anxieties and taking responsiblity for it's own choices. Fromm as the psychological explanation of Europe's US dependence?
