Twenty years ago, Peter Lodge wrote to the Guardian to complain about the state’s treatment of family carers. In 2022, he died suddenly at the home he shared with his severely disabled son, David, who had no way to call for help. 1/5

🗳️ Big on-the-ground piece from Runcorn, where a Reform UK official says those planning to back the party fall mainly into two groups: “those who set their alarm for work in the morning and are angry at those who don’t – and those who don’t” theguardian.com/politics/2025/…

Delighted to make this shortlist with Patrick Butler for our carer's allowance work! Congrats to all fellow nominees. Our stories are here - with another big one coming this weekend: theguardian.com/society/series…

Declaration imminent in Runcorn and Helsby byelection. Looks like a vanishingly narrow Reform UK win. Labour’s Karen Shore arrived a short time ago, declining to answer a question from a reporter as she passed.

Pure, nonsensical cruelty from Department for Work and Pensions. For 5 years - without telling her - they let this mother unknowingly earn 83p-£1.92p per week too much as a school dinner lady, while juggling caring for her son with severe autism. Then they slammed her with a bill for £10k. Vile.

The ⁦The Guardian⁩ exposes this cruel, perverse and nonsensical case. Oksana Shahar, a mother caring for her autistic son, faces a £10,000 debt after breaching carer’s allowance rules by earning £1.92 weekly over the limit for five years. theguardian.com/society/2025/m…

“It was so surreal and outrageous we assumed there must have been some sort of mistake”: incredibly powerful piece Josh Halliday on the ongoing carer's allowance scandal theguardian.com/society/2025/m…

Shocking that it's still going on, let them build up debt over 5 years, and the infraction? "she earned a total of £505 more than the rules allow – an average of £1.92 a week. Yet instead of repaying £505, the DWP is demanding £10,130.45" @joshhalliday theguardian.com/society/2025/m…

This is yet another example of why we need to see a complete reform of the current system to stop this devastating impact on unpaid carers. Thank you Josh Halliday and The Guardian for your consistent support in bringing awareness to this issue.
