Pls help us reach #STEM enthusiasts of all ages (well... older than 18!). No experience with science needed, only motivation for active learning, coding, hacking, science outreach, lab work, team work, and sea and sun in #Croatia! Who’s in? 🤓

Transient invaders can induce shifts between alternative stable states of microbial communities, even if the invader does not survive the transition. Check out our recent work biorxiv.org/content/10.110… with C. Ratzke and Jeff Gore

Our latest work on evolutionary repair is out! A great collaboration with Adele Marston, Vasso Makrantoni, and Daniel Robertson. Check out how budding yeast cells adapt to use meiotic cohesin in mitosis!! @EvolvingMurray biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

🦠Out now in Nature Ecology&Evolution: Strength of species interactions determines biodiversity and stability in microbial communities doi.org/10.1038/s41559…. Lab experiments and modelling reveal mechanistic origin of biodiversity and stability in microbial community.

Just out: Strength of species interactions determines biodiversity and stability in microbial communities. With Ratzke Lab 🦠⇄🦠 ⁩we show that understanding simple microbial interactions allows to predict the behavior of complex natural communities! nature.com/articles/s4155…

Our paper on lineage-specific genes (which lack detectable homologs outside a lineage) is now on bioRxiv. These genes are often interpreted as evolutionarily novel, which is an exciting possibility. But an alternative is that they have homologs that we've just failed to detect.

Attention science: I proudly present our work on bet-hedging in yeast metabolism, performed in the labs of @EvolvingMurray and Ethan Garner with Quincey Justman. We found a bizarre and fascinating example of non-genetic variation in yeast metabolic activity. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Our take on how to use experimental evolution to learn about cell biological functions is out on Current Biology. With Thomas LaBar, Yu-Ying Phoebe Hsieh and @EvolvingMurray. Here to legally bypass paywalls for 50 days: authors.elsevier.com/a/1b4zf3QW8Ru6….

New preprint (biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh…) with @EvolvingMurray and David Nelson on toxin-mediated microbial antagonism for your socially-distanced readings! We studied experimentally how antagonism affects establishment dynamics in well-mixed and spatially structured populations.

Ever wondered how multicellular beings might have evolved a life cycle? How did we go from simply dividing as single cells to transitioning between single and multi celled phases? Julien Barrere @EvolvingMurray have a story for you!
