Today Global Centre for Climate Mobility #COP29 I announced Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK’s new research on rural-urban climate migration & South-North knowledge exchange, funded by DFG public | @[email protected], in partnership with McMaster University University of Worcester University of Michigan Kisii University DAR ES SALAAM TUMAINI UNIVERSITY (DarTU) Mbarara University! 👉🏻Clarsproject.com

“Migration has proven to be a critical adaptation strategy for climate-affected, rural communities. It must be properly supported by governments and their partners.” PIK scientist Julia M. Blocher on migration due to #climatechange at #COP29

I was inspired by “The Right to Stay? Voluntary Immobility in the Context of Climate Change" IOM Climate Action pavilion at #COP29. Even in regions vulnerable to climate change, most people prefer to stay- for economic ties such as land ownership, social factors, spiritual connections.

1/ 🚨 What drives #habitability changes in an era of climate crisis? Our new paper dives into the complex, dynamic, and socially differentiated concept of habitability. Here’s what you need to know 🧵 #ClimateChange #Habitability sciencedirect.com/science/articl… The HABITABLE Project

📢Our conceptual paper on habitability for The HABITABLE Project is out! Habitability goes beyond physical climate impacts, requires socio-cultural integration & local context; we urge intersectionally & locally differentiated assessments of habitability. 👉🏻sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Join us *tomorrow* for this exciting panel Climate Change Research Group, at which I will share some insights from Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK and The HABITABLE Project events at #COP29Azerbaijan Register 👇

⏲️ Only a few days to go bef. The HABITABLE Project Final Conference! We look forward to sharing and discussing our findings on climate (im)mobility w/ scholars from all careers stages & international policy makers! 🌍 📅 4 - 6 Dec. 📍#Nairobi, Kenya All info: habitableproject.org/event/habitabl…

Our Deputy HOD @OndreSimek2 joined the The HABITABLE Project project final conference in Nairobi. This 4-year project, funded by Horizon 2020 brought together 22 partners from 18 countries to investigate the crucial nexus of climate change & migration. UNESCO 🏛️ #Education #Sciences #Culture 🇺🇳, @ULiege, Samuel Hall

Final day The HABITABLE Project. My take-away: migration may contribute to adaptive capacities, but not everyone migrates. Resilience-building & development are necessary in climate-affected areas to address inequality & contribute to habitability for those who remain. Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK

We had a very productive exchange with Albatross_eu and are delighted our Handbook for Qualitative Interviews on the Climate-Migration nexus may be useful for fieldwork! Watch this space for a new version, to be published soon.

I joined Ambassador David M. Satterfield on Baker Institute’s “Baker Briefing” podcast to discuss climate migration around the world & in the U.S. We covered the relationship between climate change & migration, avoiding the “climate victim” trope, & more. 🎙️ TUNE IN: @PIK_climate’s Julia M. Blocher joined the “Baker Briefing” podcast to discuss climate migration around the world and in the United States. Listen to her conversation with Ambassador David M. Satterfield on the complex relationship between climate and migration — and why it’s important

📢My new brief for Baker Institute on how #habitability shapes climate-related migration and displacement. E.g. why dismantling of foreign aid projects designed to help people withstand extreme weather may ultimately drive increased migration Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK bakerinstitute.org/research/how-h…

Julia M. Blocher’s new policy brief highlights how habitability’s focus on local contexts is key not only to understanding various populations’ migration decisions but also to developing sustainable policies in the face of climate change. bit.ly/3EhsYsh

How #habitability shapes climate-related migration and displacement in both wealthy and disadvantaged communities - 🆕Issue brief by PIK scientist Julia M. Blocher released by Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. 👇 bakerinstitute.org/research/how-h…

In the latest #BakerBriefing, Julia M. Blocher & Ambassador David M. Satterfield discuss how climate change amplifies socio-economic vulnerabilities, influencing #ClimateMigration decisions. They emphasize the need to view mobility as an adaptation strategy. 🎧 Listen: bakerinstitute.org/research/rethi…
