Most active volcanoes spend little time erupting, but how can we sense what's happening beneath the surface, and how these volcanoes behaved in the past? The #SensingVolcanoes exhibit at #SummerScience will let you take a closer look: curatingcrises.omeka.net/exhibits/show/…

Our final workshop is being brought to us by UK COMET and their team University of Bristol Earth Sciences. Introduducing how volcanologists investgate volcanoes, students will get hands on with volcanic rocks, see how drones can image the inside of a volcano, and maybe even experience an eruption

5 years later, but we finally have a paper to show for our Uganda fieldwork 😅 Lots of cool stuff about how magmatism can rapidly change fault networks in continental rifts 👇👇👇 sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Luke Wedmore Juliet Biggs Ake Fagereng

A wonderful Friday last week celebrating the 75th birthday and career of Sir Steve Sparks! We had some visitors, past students, and friends of Steve from across the country (and even aborad) attend. Thank you for all the messages sent in by others too! A very enjoyable day.

Research project showcase for our MSc Volcanology students at the halfway point in their theses. A fantastic range of projects across volcanology: Experimental petrology, lahar modelling, crystal analyses, thermobarometry, InSAR, and missing eruption volumes. Well done all! 🙌🏻🌋

Sentinel-1 data show a magma intrusion occurred north of Fentale volcano, Ethiopia, on around 27 September, causing many felt M4+ earthquakes. Today's acqcuisition shows deformation is now decreasing. Please follow Ethiopian experts at IGSSA for more information.

The Sentinel-1 time series for Fentale shows 1) a dyke intrusion in 2015, 2) slow uplift in 2017-2025, 3) a new dyke in 2024 further north. The 2015 dyke did not cause an eruption - more info from IGSSA, UK COMET & BGS here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10… sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
