Some polychaetes are bioluminescent; this sassy sparkler has protein structures in the bristles, making them iridescent. Polychaete means many bristles, and each body segment has a pair of fleshy protrusions called parapodia covered in bristles called chaetae. #ChileMargin2024

Effortless floater seen during #ChileMargin2024. Glass squid are filled w/ammonium chloride, making them lighter than ocean water & able to spend their time following the current to the next meal or mate.

This sea cucumber, or Enypniastes eximia, was seen during #ChileMargin2024. AKA headless chicken monsters, they eat decaying organic matter (marine snow) that falls from upper layers. This clears & aerates the sediment, making it easier for other animals to move through.
