#KJMartuRangers cleaned a soak near #Punmu & set up a camera to monitor who was coming in for a drink. They caught three playful #Dingoes drinking and splashing at night! 🐾 By watching who uses the water, KJ Martu #Rangers help care for these important places. #CaringForCountry

While checking on #ThreatenedSpecies out #OnCountry, #KJMartuRangers came across some delicious bush tucker! They collected wamurla (bush tomato) + jinyjiwirrily (wild gooseberry/desert raisin). These fruits grow on spiky bushes with purple flowers + are packed full of vitamin C.

In traditional #Pujiman days, #Martu made jakapiri (sandals) to protect their feet from hot desert sand. At #Kunawarritji Rawa #CommunitySchool, #KJMartuRangers taught kids how to weave bark from the jakapiri bush into foot-shaped sandals, just like the old people did. 🔥👣

While monitoring the #GreatDesertSkink, #KJMartuRangers from #Punmu cared for a soak. Water sources like this are vital to #MartuCulture and are protected to support #ThreatenedSpecies and #FutureGenerations on #MartuCountry.

#DidYouKnow #Martu call the #SturtsDesertPea "marlukururrpa"? Marlu = kangaroo, kuru = eye and rrpa = ish. The name roughly translates to "like kangaroo eye/s." Marlukururrpa is one of Australia’s most iconic wildflowers, found across central + north-western Australia.

While cleaning a soak, #KJMartuRangers found 3 old grinding stones, left behind from traditional #Pujiman (desert-born) times. These stones were used for grinding seeds into flour and were often left at camp sites to be used again on future visits.

Minyarra (bush onion) 🧅 is a popular Martu #BushTucker treat. Enjoyed roasted in the coals or eaten raw, it makes a delicious snack while travelling across Country! Collected from Jan-Jun, it grows beneath the sand near springs + salt lakes, where the ground still holds water.

On-Country with the #KJWomenAndFamiliesProgram, little Maleriah was shown how to make damper. While store-bought flour is used now instead of grinding seeds, the practice helps Martu carry food knowledge forward from pujiman times into today.
