We think there are a couple of key messages here. Firstly, deaths from alcohol, drugs and suicide are on wildly different trajectories in some countries, bringing into question that value of a single, cohesive 'deaths of despair' narrative...

What have we learned about suicide through research? Discover the top findings! ⬇️

Alcohol duty provides desperately needed revenue to fund public services on the front line of alcohol harm. #DutyToRecover

We found a linear association between total #AUDIT score & outcomes. Three of 6 specific domains of alcohol use (#dependence symptoms, harmful effects of drinking and #binge drinking) were associated with increased odds of all 3 outcomes.

Our findings suggest that clinicians should inquire particularly carefully about suicidal behaviour in anyone with signs of harmful drinking, using non-judgemental and sensitive questioning, as this provides an important opportunity for therapeutic assessment and risk management.

Gaining an understanding of the circumstances that lead to binge drinking and #alcohol #dependence whilst using a #motivationalinterviewing approach may help identify how harmful drinking patterns might be shifted to the benefit of the patient, thereby reducing #suicide risk.

One of the advantages of the Nordic alcohol retail system is that this data, which is vital for understanding trends in harm, is available to the public quickly. In other places health bodies have to buy in this data.
