Who are fittest:☀️‘summer specialists’ that maximize growth season gains, or❄️‘winter specialists’ that minimize overwintering risk? We investigated this in temperate #lepidoptera, now out in Nature Communications Both work but cause different pop. dynamics. 🧵⬇️ doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

Curious how butterflies evolve across Europe? Me too!!! Let's join forces in sampling butterflies and moths across Europe, studying their evolution across latitudes and through seasons. Help start LepEU, the European Lepidopteran Population Genomics Consortia #LepEU 1/n

Hey BoB #LepEU curious people, let’s try a quick LepEU meeting at next coffee break, at 16:00 outside Room ZI to start talking face to face. Spread the word!!

We're continuing the Phenotypic Plasticity session with two very cool talks from Matthew Nielsen and Rachel Steward focusing on diapause in butterflies and how it is related to melanism and genetic diversity #BoB2023

This is now out in Cell Reports! cell.com/cell-reports/f… It's accompanied by this very kind preview: cell.com/cell-reports/f… by Kronforst and Sheikh, which also looks at really cool work by Nishida et al on a convergently-evolved green liquid wing pigment (!?!?)

Our paper on alternative splicing in facultative diapause is out in Heredity rdcu.be/dxBV1. We build on previous results showing strong signatures of selection in plastically spliced genes. Much thanks to coauthors Peter Pruisscher Christopher Wheat and diapause expert Kevin Roberts

Genes diff. spliced in diapause have lower pi and pN/pS than other genes. Against predictions, the effect was stronger in univoltine (not plastic) than in multivoltine (plastic) populations of P. napi, suggesting negative/purifying selection maintains diapause splicing patterns

PSA, since I've now seen problems arising from this: As of Sept 2023, GATK no longer makes missing genotypes explicit in VCFs (i.e. "./." as in the VCF spec). Missing genotypes are instead coded as "0/0" with a DP=0 format field. See attached for examples.

Quantifying temperature’s effect on #diapause #termination requires fitting #TPCs to binary biological data. In our new paper, out now in #PNAS, we show how to do this, revealing the sequential nature of diapause termination and post-diapause development. doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

Supercool work on how butterflies terminate diapause! Potentially also explaining how they synchronize their emergance in spring! 🦋 🐛
