Wow, look at this coronal hole! It has grown a bit over the past day and looks a bit more impressive. We may see some faster solar winds at Earth in the next 2-3 days, triggering minor to moderate geomagnetic storming (G1-G2/Kp 5-6). Good chances for mid-latitude aurora!🤞

To keep our astronauts alive on the way to Mars and beyond and at the surface of Mars, we need to build a robust space weather warning system consisting of imagers, magnetometers, thermal plasma and energetic particle measurements. We need the Solar Wind MultiScale!!!

Massive, Earth-facing coronal hole detected by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. Fast solar winds ahead. The Mother’s Day, 2024 Space storm caused hundreds of millions of dollar damage for farmers due to loss of GPS accuracy.

ACE at Earth-Sun L1 measures transition into high speed solar wind, with about 10 nT Bz variation. Nothing too drastic so far. During May 2024 storm, the maximum Bz variation was ~100 nT.
