around 11pm, we saw a couple emerge from a side entrance to our alley and sheepishly approach the detached garage. we called out that it’s okay and motioned them over. (4/?)

they quickly gathered their things, and my SO went inside to gather the rest of their belongings. I’d put their perishables into a cooler with wheels and filled it with ice so they could keep their food. (5/?)

these people were so kind and so grateful that we were being β€”nothing special β€” simply decent about the situation. it made me think of the folks who come back to find their belongings destroyed and face the threat of abuse and police violence. (6/?)

and what it must feel like to realize that instead of sleeping in the place you’ve called home, you’re back out on the street. we gave them money for a place to stay for the night, and they showed us how they got in so we could re-secure the unit. (7/?)

all I can say is, you and me are one bad unforeseen circumstance away from being in their shoes. I see myself in every human struggling to exist under the crushing weight of capitalism. (8/8

My 11 year old got lost and asked for help at a library. They told her she couldn't call her mom from the phone and should use a payphone. She said she didn't know how. They said they couldn't help and she ended up crying alone on the street corner Toronto Public Library

I hope the PhD lady got a chance to do something nice to celebrate, like perhaps having coffee in her garden with her spouse, or sharing a bowl of chili with her neighbours

NORAD tracks Santa Claus because of how fast he moves. If he crashed at the speed he travels, a direct impact would have the force of a nuclear weapon. He could obliterate a whole city. We don’t leave out cookies because we love him; we leave them out because we fear him

"Shut down the government for a month" sounds good to stoned 10th graders and trillionaires because they can't envision things like "Military families missing multiple paychecks beginning at Christmas," either substantively or politically.

The night the CA fires started, we were texting with my brother. He said he was evacuating, but I could see from his location (we share that) that he wasn't gone. My husband said I should go to bed, and I was just glued to my phone, waiting for my brother to leave. I found out

Literally crying in the Target parking lot right now. 🧡 I was struggling with unloading my toddler, my bags and wrangling an unruly cart (seriously β€” why do some lack power-steering?) A fire truck from Redondo Beach (E61) had just parked nearby and four firefighters got out.

It's an underlying Latin error. If "preventative" were correct, then "prevention" would be "preventation." When I saw "preventative" in a book published in the 1930s, however, I knew that trying to correct this would be a hopeless cause.

MM  Love that story. I’ll bet those chickens dug a hole to hide in. Have you seen the story of a Palisades girl who came across a horse who wouldn’t get in the carrier truck, so she rode the horse for 14 miles to get out.
