This is a rather long thread on the challenges of conducting scientific research at an IIT or an IISER or IISc. I am highlighting the issues that have cropped up in the recent years due to Govt's genuine efforts in bringing about fiscal discipline with tax payers' money. 1 of 25

Almost 90% of the Indian population has personal wealth that is less than the Nature journal's per article open access charges of about $11000. That's how obnoxious that number is. Simply put, it is ludicrous day light robbery.

Most scientists have simple modest wants: a) stable decently paying job b) funding to pursue stuff they are interested in (& most PIs would be happy w/ a medium-small lab) c) for their work to be read & appreciated by other scientists c) to feel like they are part of a community.

India's impact on plant biotech is astounding. So many papers on reliable tissue culture of countless species and so far all the ones I've tried to replicate across the last decade have been successful +/- variance due to lack of exact cultivar. Underrated output, tbh.

This is why: 1. Funding decisions for PIs must take into account recommendation letters from former PhD graduates and postdocs. Because funding is used to pay for more students and postdocs, it should be allocated only if the PI knows how to manage people correctly. 2.
