ON THIS DAY: 1840 - Keyworth Windmill was struck by lightning. Mr Alsop the Miller, in attempting to pull the rope to stop the mill, was struck & suffered loss of use of the right side of his body & leg. He recovered quickly but had was left with the scars of a burn on his foot.

ON THIS DAY: 1976 - The Keyworth Village Quiz is launched with eight teams participating and it would become an annual event to the present day. Inspired by Derek Oakley after a Keyworth team had lost to Gotham village in a Nottingham “Inter Village” quiz in 1974.

ON THIS DAY: 2009 - A launch meeting for a Keyworth branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A) takes place which moves to an inaugural meeting on 24 February 2009, thereafter upwards of 40 activity groups evolve into a thriving organisation.

ONTHIS DAY: 1972 - Children from South Wolds are out in the village distributing wood logs to people running short of coal. The logs have been cut from fallen trees in an orchard owned by a parent of a pupil.

ON THIS DAY: 1880 Plumtree & Keyworth Midland Railway Station designed by the Midland’s architect John Holloway Sanders opened for passengers. Since 1 November 1879 it had only been used for goods.

80 years ago on the 6th of June 1944 the allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in their tens of thousands. D-Day marked the beginning of the liberation of France and western Europe. We will always remember. We will always be proud.

ON THIS DAY: 1982 - Royal Marine & Keyworth hero Kevin Woodford was on the Sir Galahad when it was attacked by Argentine aircraft leaving him severely injured during the Falklands War. Kevin later met Prince Charles who visited the Hospital in Gosport where Kevin was recovering.

BREAKING: UK Defence Intelligence reports that Russia’s armed forces have likely suffered approximately 900,000 casualties since the start of their full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including up to 250,000 killed. This marks Russia’s largest military losses since World War II.
