attending my first #HHMI Science Meeting HHMI | Janelia was such a phenomenal experience - from mingling with other Gilliam Fellows to exciting conversations with Investigators in different fields (and not to mention the STUNNING campus views!!), this was one for the books 🤩🧠

I am a PhD student with a prestigious fellowship at a top world class university. I’m also a product of social programs, free lunch, Headstart, Pell grants, and other programs that gave students like myself access to the platform. 1/

Me too - social programs, food stamps, Pell grant, Medicaid, need-based scholarships, sliding scale health clinics, public libraries, PAID undergrad research opportunities, diversity programs. Wouldn’t be here without them.

When reviewing grad school apps, I actively fight against the achievement counting as a solo metric. A good approach my mentor taught me is to ask "what did they do with the opportunity and resources they had" then look for the characteristics I would want in a grad student.

What is #DEI it's an approach to look for the best brightest and most qualified. Without #DEI we ignore qualified applicants, judge without rubrics, and don't give everyone equal access to opportunity.

Using marginalized people to recruit other marginalized people & discarding them because they expect diversity, equity, & inclusion to be a real focus in an organization is a form of academic exploitation. Marginalized people are more than optics, checklists, & convenience.

achieved an exciting science milestone: my image is currently displayed on the walls of MIT! it feels a little surreal seeing my research and name on a wall, but I'm so thankful for my mentors, labmates, the Koch Institute at MIT, and the patients & families that we do this work for.
