Great meeting these great ELUMs and finally meeting Abby Spencer, MD, MS, FACP in person! Ann Van Heest, MD, another ELUM, was also in the ortho RRC meeting. Unfortunately, each of the groups was so busy that we couldn't get everyone in one pic! @ELAMProgram

As in other areas of research, consideration of sex in ortho research is inconsistent. We can work together to improve this. NIH Women's Health SGHC AMWA Doctors KU Medical Center Sex and Gender in Orthopaedic Research: How Do We Continue to Move the Needle? pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38905354/

To improve patient care, we need to more consistently consider sex and gender when researching conditions that impact women and men. This includes disaggregating and reporting data based on sex. Janine Clayton, MD AMWA Doctors SGHC The University of Kansas Health System @nih_niam

While more women are entering orthopaedic residency, they are still less likely than men to achieve leadership positions. We need to change that. @ELAMProgram AMWA Doctors Odds of Attaining Orthopaedic Leadership Based on Race, Ethnicity, and Sex pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39018573/

While we need to continue to be be mindful of our biases, increasing race & gender diversity in ortho requires more than that. We need to find opportunities to engage with diverse students at all levels & support those who enter the field for the entirety of their careers.

I appreciated the opportunity to contribute some recommendations to this piece. It's never too early for med students to start exploring specialties and to let faculty know they are interested and to ask questions. AMWA Doctors AAOS @ELAMProgram KU Medical Center ً
