Anjava is a northern Madagascar sugar producer currently run by a Chinese company, and is the major industrial producer in the area. The irrigation canals the company uses to grow its sugar cane can put it at odds w/ local communities, who grow food in & around the canals.

Local communities benefit from the canals & compete for the water in them. The conflicts mean local community members set fires in the sugar cane fields daily in the harvest season as part of the ongoing struggle with the company. Read more: anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
