On these cold days, I can’t say how much comfort I am getting from this book of NEW SCOTTISH BAKING from Sue Lawrence. Cheese scones, flapjacks, oatcakes, bannocks, shortbread and so much more. It would make a lovely present.

How do universal free school meals benefit a child? In so many ways. Read this important thread from Naomi Duncan on initial findings from London. So far, benefits include reducing household debt and stress and children trying and enjoying new foods (cf TastEd)

'Their flavor is distilled and crystalline; if the color orange had a flavor, this would be it'. Thank you to Eric Kim for this joyous write-up of the butter-poached carrots in THE SECRET OF COOKING. Featuring Raymond Blanc, whose idea it is. nytimes.com/2024/11/20/mag…

“If daily life is made up of hundreds of meals...then making slightly disappointing carrots every time is really annoying!” How to have non-disappointing simple vegetable side dishes every time: butter-poach them! Eric Kim nytimes.com/2024/11/20/mag…

Butter-poached carrots from The Secret of Cooking was recipe of the day on NYT Cooking! Thank you so much to Eric Kim for the beautiful write-up (and prodigious recipe testing) which made me see the simplicity of the recipe in a whole new light. 🙏🧡

Nigella Lawson Bee Wilson Such a lovely celebration - thank you! Over the moon you loved these eccentric recipes as much as me: I had such fun archivally foraging for them. Wondering if nigel slater might find them intriguing - can’t resist spreading the word about Agatha Christie’s hot bean salad ..

The science of the food plus law, economics and politics. Such a positive day - in no small part due to superb leadership and chairing by the peerless Sheila Dillon - thanks Imperial Business School and Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation for moving the conversation forward.

Thanksgiving - day of ritual foods- seems a good day to mention that taste may be identity but it isn’t destiny. You can change the foods you love at any age. I recorded this short podcast for New York Times Opinion on beans and ⁦TastEd⁩ nytimes.com/2024/11/28/opi… via @NYTOpinion

Do you remember your very first taste of plum? Headteacher ⁦Dr Jason O'Rourke⁩ of ⁦Wash'borough Academy⁩ recorded this three year-old trying her first plum as part of ⁦TastEd⁩. She goes from fear to curiosity to joy. As discussed on the New York Times Opinion⁩ podcast.

“If any food were a perfect candidate for changing our preferences, it’s beans,” Bee Wilson says. On this episode of The Opinions, she makes the case that these tiny legumes could help save the planet. Listen: nyti.ms/3Vc5Oca

P.S. Here is a chance to see someone's tastes changing before your very eyes, because a teacher helped her find her own courage to try. I know we are all primed to give up on videos after 10 seconds these days. But the magic here happens around 40 seconds in... TastEd

This is just to say thank you again to everyone who has cooked from THE SECRET OF COOKING. It’s a third off at Amazon U.K. until dec 1st. But know I would be every bit as delighted if you got it from one of the great independent booksellers who have supported it. Or a library.

How does water taste to you? We are going to create new TastEd lessons, helping children develop a preference for plain water (+informing why clean water matters/how devastating it is to be without it). If anyone here has learned ways to enjoy water more, do tell me...

Bee Wilson TastEd To answer the question, some water tastes dusty to me. And some water tastes "sweet." Not like it has sugar in it, but by analogy it seems sweet. I don't know if kids talk about tastes this way, but I feel like I taste water on the back of my tongue more than on the front/sides.

Bee Wilson Honoria Lucasta TastEd The girl fills bottles with water at home when she knows we're going to Wales. She loves the taste of our hard water and really dislikes the taste of soft water. I agree. Also always fill up any spare bottles in the car when we drive through Malvern - the very best tasting water.

Bee Wilson Book-ish 📚 Topping & Company Booksellers of Bath Was lucky to pick one up in a charity shop for £2.50. It's brilliant. After cooking for 45 years I learned many new ideas. Read cover to cover, bought an instant pot, discarded unused pressure and slow cookers. (charity shops) and am enthused by cooking all over again

🧵1/2 This is such an important topic - many children & young people do not like plain water and it tastes different depending on supply - with this inconsistency being problematical for some. SO many benefits to liking and drinking enough water including healthy teeth

A few things tried over the years in role as occupational therapist: Different temperatures including adding ice in fun shapes; filtering & involving children in process; drinking through and in/out of different cups/straws (including curly); sucking ice cubes/plain water ice pop

The charity TastEd offer early educators and teachers support, training and resources to deliver a range of simple taste education lessons for children. Was brilliant to see the team’s work firsthand on a visit to the amazing Archfield House Nursery and Preschool in Bristol
