New preprint out on microbial urea use in the deep sea. Bottom line: urea is important! Wonderful work by several members of my group over years, including @NestorArandia Alex Jaffe Chloé Baumas

3rd chapter of my dissertation finally published in Nature Communications! We reconstructed the first complete Asgard archaeal genomes from short reads, validated with long reads. Genome structures & metabolic insights reveal key roles in carbon/hydrogen cycling in wetlands.

‼️Exciting news this morning! Our new preprint on human skin #archaeome is online. A great collaboration with the Schleper lab Schleper Lab Vienna, spearheaded by Alexander Mahnert🇪🇺🇺🇦 supported by many colleagues and friends! 👇Details: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Our latest preprint is out! This paper led by Sukhwan Yoon uncovers a new process controlling the global hydrogen and nitrogen cycles, i.e. the direct coupling of hydrogen oxidation and ammonification. A beautiful combination of isolation, bioreactor, and systems biology studies.

1/11 Excited to share our latest paper in @GenomeResearch: "Complete genomes of Asgard archaea reveal diverse integrated and mobile genetic elements" 🧬🦠 The Banfield Lab

Ethane-oxidizing #archaea (close relatives of #methanogens) channel electrons from ethane to F420. The Fpo complex oxidizes F420, producing an H+ gradient and transferring electrons to bacteria, possibly via #nanowires. Very excited to have come on board as the co-chair for this event alongside Chris Greening! Climate change is an urgent issue, and microbes are the solution! PhDs, ECRs all have reduced rego for this event, so look out for that + abstracts announcements soon! #enviromicro
