Interesting tidbit I learned: When the original Vapnik-Chervonenkis paper came out in 1971, they did not coin the term "shattered set" (or an analogue in Russian). The use of "shattering" didn't come about until The Wharton School's J. Michael Steele first published the term in 1978.
