Teacher guidance can improve students' collaboration skills (not new knowledge). Challenges the belief that collaboration skills are 'biologically primary' and can't be taught. In fact, really helpful to teach. bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bj…

Thanks ⁦Susan McDonald⁩ for your incisive piece on ongoing problems in early reading instruction in Australia. I appreciated the opportunity to contribute. This is what our #SOLARLab work at ⁦ La Trobe University⁩ is busy addressing. abc.net.au/news/2023-09-1…

I was a descendant of convicts. On both sides. Within 10 years one was a blacksmith and other married to a cop. In that time tens of thousands of indigenous Australians were slaughtered. How can anybody find the two experiences analogous?

AERO's new model explains how to align student learning processes with teaching practices in 4 crucial areas. From managing cognitive load to creating a learning-focused environment, it's all about optimising the learning experience. ow.ly/PgIA50POrX7 #HowStudentsLearn

Kylie Murphy found some quotes from the same person that I quoted from the east Berlin wall yesterday (thank you Kylie, I marinated on them all day today) This one, speaks to me quite loudly “We are what we do, especially what we do to change what we are.” Eduardo Galeano

Finding out and thinking carefully are central to Australia's Mparntwe Education Declaration. Many Ts work hard to develop the required skills in Ss. It's problematic that the opposite of this approach has been promoted as a legitimate option. blog.aare.edu.au/the-voice-refe…

There is SO much following of people rather than evidence in the SoR/SoL movements now. Terrible ideas, misinformation & superficial levels of knowledge abound. Be critical consumers. Stop following blindly. Ask hard questions. Don’t assume what is offered is sound/best practice.

There’s a proliferation of SoR/SoL conferences. My advice if you’re running them is to ensure they’re actually promoting best practice. I’m seeing EduCeleb blindness, some practices that aren’t consistent with the evidence & even stolen content. What are your checks and balances?

When this came out today, I was running a school workshop on explicitly teaching critical and creative thinking skills in existing units. Teachers are so up for this! link.springer.com/article/10.100… Ping 𝗗𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗶𝗻 Steve Murphy

My new paper titled “the brain and learning: new attempts to integrate cognitive science into Australian education” for Society for Applied Research in Memory & Cognition. I’d be interested to hear perspectives - I suspect they could go in both directions! psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2025-…
