This #EndangeredSpeciesDay, we’re spotlighting the axolotl! While popular in pop culture, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild. See them up close in our new axolotl habitat — made possible by 11-year-old Minecraft fan Sebastian Stirdivant Wason and his family. 💚

Peek-a-boo! 👀 Big cats — like jaguars — scratch trees to mark their territory, sharpen their claws and stretch their muscles. 💅 Sound familiar? Your house cat does the same thing at home on their scratching posts (or your couch). 🐱 #Caturday #Jaguar #BigCat #Kitty

Meet Springer the Cape vulture! 🤩 At 3 years old, Springer is the youngest member of the flock. He’s known for his curious nature, love of pork, "rearranging" the landscape, and his fascinating habit of getting up close and personal with guests at the viewing window. 👀

Throwing it back—70 million years, to be exact! 🐢 The Fly River turtle (aka the pig-nosed turtle 🐽) is the only surviving member of the family Carettochelyidae and has been around since before the dinosaurs became extinct. #WorldTurtleDay

We love the axolotl—frilly gills and all—but do you know how to say its name? It’s NOT “axe-oh-lot-ul.” It’s "ah-SHO-low-tl" — with a unique “tl” sound made by blowing air off your tongue’s sides. Aztec in origin, “axolotl” means “water monster” or “water dog” in Nahuatl.
