Tax Day. A good day to note that US taxes (income taxes & social insurance contributions) push many low-income households into poverty. New paper by me, David Brady (@davebrady72.bsky.social) Ive Marx & Zach Parolin reports that US taxes push a larger % of adults into poverty than do several other countries.

I'm struck by 106 million working-age Americans, their heterogeneity, who experience poverty and yet have no safety net. These are voters, members of our families and communities. Other rich countries do something about it. We can too! 🙏 The Brookings Institution The Hamilton Project

The US is exceptional in providing almost no safety net to (presumed) work-able, childless adults - 106 million people! No wonder that poverty among this demographic is a serious albeit largely unrecognized problem. From a new paper with Janet Gornick David Brady (@davebrady72.bsky.social) Zach Parolin (1/n)
