Carrickedmond and Killoe lock horns tonight in Round 2 of SFC. Their 1st SFC meeting was in 1976 when both were in IFC. At the time IFC teams could amalgamate to compete for a place in the SFC proper. After a draw, the South Longford combination won the replay 1-9 to 1-7.

The handball alley at Smithfield in Legan was opened on 22nd October 1933 with a grand tournament confined to Longford, Westmeath, Cavan and Roscommon. The beautiful alley still stands along the River Blackwater in Legan. More on handball in Longford at: longfordgaelicstats.ie/handball/

100 years ago today (26th July 1925) Longford appeared in an All-Ireland final for the very first time in the delayed 1924 All-Ireland Junior Football Championship Final at Croke Park. Kerry ran out winners by 1-6 to 0-4. Team captain was Frank Gaffney (Longford Wanderers).

25 years ago today (29th July 2000) Longford hurlers won the Connacht Juvenile 'C' Hurling Championship with victory over Mayo at Athleague by 2-15 to 1-8. John Newman was captain and Joe O’Brien was chief marksman. Longford eventually lost out to Armagh in the All-Ireland Final.
