Latest small, overachieving program to fall victim to the Central Section’s flawed competitive equity playoff system: Caruthers girls basketball under one of the state’s finest, Coach Anna Almeida. A year after capturing a state D-3 title as a 14 seed, Raiders bumped to D-1.

Still, they should be hanging D-2 or D-3 section banners. The section lists Caruthers girls basketball with a D-2 “base division.” Yet the boys are D-5.

If CaruthersGirlsBB played in their enrollment division it would have been multiple section and state titles. Dynasties that are only allowed for big schools
