A stunning sentence from L. Michael Morales on Numbers 16:

“O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.” (2 Chron. 20:12) Look to God in hope. He will not disappoint those who wait upon him.

As with Israel’s entire cultic system, the purification offering was not humanity’s attempt at pacifying God, but the LORD’s merciful gift to his people: “The LORD spoke to Moses saying, Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, When a soul sins…” (4:1-2).
