Atlas Wholesale celebrated grand opening today for new 65,000 sq-ft warehouse in Westland. This 76-year-old, 3-generation family business and serves 400 restaurants. It moved most of its operations from Detroit to former US Ice site on Central City Parkway near Wayne.

Our home show returns next weekend at a new venue: Schoolcraft College Vistatech Center on Haggerty south of 7 Mile. Free admission and parking. We have 50 vendors ready to share ideas and schedule estimates.

Wayne Road just south of Joy Road is now closed for several months for a bridge replacement project. Those looking to drive from Livonia and I-96, south to Westland, will need to use Newburgh and Merriman roads.

Touch a Job Career for middle-school and high-school students returns to Schoolcraft College MEC Building (13001 Merriman Road) 9a-1p on Saturday, May 17. Students can explore health, public safety and skilled trades jobs with hands-on experiences. Free admission.

Starting Monday, Newburgh Rd over Schoolcraft Rd will be closed (one-lane detour along Schoolcraft) and the EB exit ramp off I-96 to Newburgh will be closed (detour at Farmington Rd exit) as part of ongoing larger project at I-96 and M-14 in Livonia and Plymouth.

Livonia City Council authorized a $150 million Municipal Buildings Proposal vote Aug. 5 to build new police station, library, parking structure, renovate fire facilities, develop new parks and trails, and raze old Civic Center buildings to clear 27 acres for private development.

We had grand opening Wednesday for Wicked Pickle in Westland: 10 pickleball courts, meeting room, and plans for alcohol service later in year. Stern family invested $320k to repurpose large retail spot on Warren near Central City Pkwy.

Citing a hardship, the Livonia Zoning Board of Appeals granted a zoning variance Monday to make way for a SHEETZ gas station at 8 Mile and Newburgh. The rezoning for this was denied by Livonia City Council in January. Developers still need site plan approval from Council.

With our chamber supporting the Livonia Municipal Facilities Proposal vote on Aug. 5, we are hosting a panel discussion involving supportive Livonia residents with different business perspectives on July 17 to help our members learn more.

Digging has begun in the Six Mile-Haggerty area towards constructing a Whole Foods store - the first step in a multiple-phase redevelopment of the 22-acre site in Livonia.

We salute Westland City Clerk Richard LeBlanc who retires Monday. He served Westland for 33 years as a school board member, city council member, state representative, county commissioner and city clerk. He was also a police officer in Canton and Walled Lake.
