The culmination of an NSF project that began in 2006. Beyond implications for the response of these mutualisms to warming, it’s the first functional ecology paper where the symbiont and host identities are well vetted –The maturation coral physiology research has finally arrived.

Does coevolution minimize tradeoffs? Indeed, host generalist (featured here) and host specialist symbionts (from the the recent work of Turnham et al. 2023 doi/10.1098/rspb.2023.1021) appear adapted to make the most of their mutualisms while under duress.

Dofleinia armata (striped anemone) - Broome. Its body is covered with nematocysts (stinging cells). Each n-cyst is loaded with neurotoxins that interfere with the nervous system by switching off electrical signals in the cells. No comm's b/w cells leads to paralysis ☠️ look out🦀

Super stoked to be recognized as an ICRS Fellow by International Coral Reef Society. Ready to rock and roll the 2nd half of my career and try to do what I can to protect/conserve/help reefs and their biodiversity, and get the word out! #thisishowMISErolls

Published today in the journal Coral Reefs, a paper on how the use of multiple genetic markers and repeated sampling provides a comprehensive understanding of the diversity and ecology of coral-dinoflagellate mutualisms. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Save the spider mom! Raising the next generation to be better stewards of all life on Earth has consequences! My daughter left this note to her mother about a captured prisoner to ‘care for’ and release in the morning.

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to put pressure on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research

Phytoplankton need metals such as iron, cobalt, copper, and zinc for their metabolism. Because concentrations of these elements are so low in cells, and because cells are so tiny, scientists need a focused beam of X-rays to be able to make measurements. Photos: Susanna Michael.
