Find out how the genetic basis of the kākāpō structural color polymorphism suggests balancing selection by an extinct apex predator – such a great collaboration w Hernán Morales Dr Andrew Digby Deidre Vercoe GenomicsAotearoa Anna Santure Joseph & many more: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…

New paper out in PLOS Biology! Two SNPs fully explain kākāpō color polymorphism, likely under balancing selection from extinct predators🦜🦅🧬 Great collab of many evol biologists, conservation scientists and physicists, led by the brilliant Lara Urban journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…

Amazing week at the #EWDA2024 congress, where I had the opportunity to present our work using Oxford Nanopore for real-time AIV surveillance. Huge thanks to the organizers for such a great event! EWDA Student chapter Lara Urban

The kākāpō is an endangered #parrot endemic to NZ. Lara Urban Hernán Morales & co's study of most living #kakapo shows that their green vs olive #feather color #polymorphism has a structural basis and may result from past predation #PLOSBiology plos.io/4daSv1Z

While I travel less due to now having my baby at home, I am super proud to see my group presenting our research out there – Albert Perlas 🍉 EWDA Student chapter on AIV monitoring, Ela Sauerborn ETH Zürich Ascona workshop & #NCM Oxford Nanopore on AMR monitoring, @harika_urel & Samir gcb2025, ...

Here now Ela Sauerborn getting ready for her invited talk at #NCM Oxford Nanopore in Boston. She will show how nanopore sequencing can surpass established clinical diagnostics for antimicrobial resistance profiling - work w Ebenezer Foster-Nyarko London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Nick Goldman EMBL-EBI TU München etc.

You really feel like diving back into work when you receive such thoughtful presents from your collaborators – thank you so much to the University of Zurich Vetsuisse-Fakultät Zürich Chlamydia group, merci Hanna Marti, Nicole Borel, Enrique Rayo, Magdalena de Arriba et al.!

On the day of my keynote lecture gcb2025, thanks to my fantastic group for this month: Daniel Gygax benchmarking Oxford Nanopore #Mk1d f Zambia; @harika_urel on AI & squiggles gcb2025; Albert Perlas 🍉 & Tim monitoring bird migration f AIV; Ela Sauerborn invited speaker #NCM Boston!

Inspiring talk by Lara Urban gcb2025, very happy to see Oxford Nanopore in action in fields relevant for lung research FZ Borstel. Liked the concept of using squiggle-based raw data directly for prediction using information beyond sequence and “standard” DNA and RNA modifications.

After United Nations's condemnation of Israel's destruction of Gaza, the 3 top tagesschau news are on Israeli attacks on Beirut center, on United NationsIFIL - condemned as war crimes by many incl @UN -, and Olaf Scholz announcing more weapons f Israel. Bundesregierung, pls rethink what you are doing.

A full room listening to HelmholtzAssociation postdoc Albert Perlas 🍉 at the Intl One Health Symposium in Berlin; he uses portable Oxford Nanopore & other technologies to monitor the RNA virome & AMR of globally significant wetlands – funded by @OHP_ger, w IRTA-CReSA Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Toulouse @schauflerlab!

The study nicely illustrates how Oxford Nanopore overcomes Illumina's errors, which often arise from difficulties aligning reads in repetitive (left) and variant-dense regions (right). "The work thus heralds a new era, in which Illumina short-read sequencing no longer rules supreme."

Our #OneHealth group Computational Health Center is ready for the #WYMM conference in Zürich! Thanks for the invitation Oxford Nanopore Oxford Nanopore Events.

We are happy to welcome Lara Urban Lara Urban in our Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene UZH team! She is on track for an assistant professorship in Genomics and AI. We are looking forward to working with her.
