Life in the age of Twitter: World events happen and my reaction is, "I wonder what the person who impersonates Larry the Cat has to say about this."

A thread on why we shouldn't rely on the census to adjudicate race or indigeneity. Looking at the period 1820-1875, I will look at Dakota/Lakota people in federal, state, and territorial censuses. It demonstrates just how many Native people were in the census & problems of race.

The 1838 Wisconsin Territory census recorded whites and free people of color. Of 22 Dakota households, all are listed as white, accept 1 person of color in the Jean B. Faribault family. Also the 3 "free men of color" listed under Major Taliaferro were probably enslaved, not free.

Decolonization isn't about publishing an article, modifying a syllabus, or creating a DEI committee. It's about dismantling structures, institutions, & ideas. It’s also life-affirming. It’s about organizing politically to reclaim territories & collective subjectivities.

For White folks who think they have something useful to say about boundaries between Latino and Native identity: it's time for you to find a new hobby.

If you think that tribes are just social groupings, and find football analogies more convincing than my usual mumbo-jumbo, here goes: Tribal governments aren't the Green Bay Packers. Tribal citizens aren't a community that owns stuff together. Reservations aren't Lambeau Field.
