1/ I appreciate the AP headline’s simple explanation of how the NFL was using this algorithm This is part of a much longer and bigger and ongoing study about race, algorithms, and medicine. I hope to write more about it in the future.

Meeting with #NikoleHannahJones for an interview this week made me reflect on my June interview with Walter Hussman, the conservative Arkansas media magnate and #UNC megadonor who lobbied against hiring her. It's worth talking a bit about these two people and interviews.

Here is my full statement about my decision to decline tenure at UNC Chapel Hill and instead accept the inaugural Knight Chair in Race and Reporting at Howard University.

In a statement, Ida Bae Wells calls on UNC-Chapel Hill leaders to advocate for changing the role of politically-appointed board members, who currently neither reflect the demographics of NC nor the UNC student body. #ncpol #ncga

My colleague Steven Roberts was recently invited to comment on a "debate" about diversity at a Association for Psychological Science journal. His experience was troubling and surreal, and lays bare the very biases he studies. He describes it in this important pre-print. 1/ psyarxiv.com/xk4yu

This thread explains the situation well. In the simplest terms...white scholars are mad that "their science" is not the only science anymore. Not surprising given psych's white supremacist foundations, but still infuriating.

Regarding the Roberts preprint: All psych race scholars both had an experience like this. All have heard countless experiences like it from our colleagues. It keeps us with at least 1 foot out of the door of academia, where it is so often made clear that we don't belong.

Deaths from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria surpassed 42,000. The UN projects over 6,000 deaths in Syria, most in rebel-held areas where it took days for aid to arrive. Families displaced by war are sleeping in the cold or in trucks: "We cannot afford... a bottle of water."

Love to see how people complain about "criticism lobbed at LLMs" &c. Folks: the criticism isn't of the models. It's of the people (often on behalf of corporations) making false claims abt the models for the purposes of profit, consolidating power, and feeding their AGI fantasies.

I am floored by the idea that automating discrimination, building tools for social control, and entrenching mass surveillance is not "existential." But ghost stories and scifi fantasies are.
