One of the most prominent women associated with the history of Clifton House is Mary Ann McCracken who was always ready to help those less fortunate than herself. Keep a look out for Mary Ann’s statue being unveiled this Friday! #CliftonHouse250 #CliftonHouseBelfast

There is a growing sentiment among those engaged in Belfast’s history that the city should establish its own festival. The success of such an endeavour relies on the active support and participation of the public. Join us for a conversation with Glenn Patterson, Leanne

Another woman who played an important role in the Ladies’ Committee was William Tennent’s illegitimate daughter Isabella. Isabella Tennent was one of the founding members of the Ladies’ Committee, who served as both the Committee’s secretary and outdoor visitor. #CliftonHouse250

Fascinating talk tonight on Mary Ann McCracken, Martha McTier and female radicalism in 18thC Belfast by Dr Catriona Kennedy. Much food for thought for my own research 📚. Thanks go to Clifton House Belfast and maryannmccracken for organising this event.

Love researching the festive traditions of the Belfast poorhouse at Christmas, especially when it comes to the children 🎄. Some of my particular favourites is some of the children going home to spend Christmas with their families and having a Christmas tea party in 1815 🧁.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the first child to have entered the Belfast Poor House. Over the summer months, we will uncover stories about some of the youngest residents who called the Poor House home as well as how they were educated and allowed to have a childhood.

#OnThisDay 1770 Mary Ann McCracken was born to Captain John McCracken & his wife Ann. Mary Ann would go on to led one of the most remarkable lives in Belfast's history. Her motto, which accurately sums up her character, was it is ‘better to wear out than to rust out’.
