Yesterday I successfully defended my PhD dissertation titled “Soviet and Russian Approaches to Democracy in International Law” at the University of Tartu School of Law. My deepest gratitude goes to my supervisor, Professor Lauri Mälksoo and to the opponent, Professor Angelika Nussberger .

This week and part of the next, I am visiting professor at the University of Vienna Faculty of Law, teaching a course on the history of Soviet and Russian approaches to international law. My grandma (a German philologist) sometimes sang: ‘Wien, Wien, nur du allein’ and I see why.
