Just a few centuries ago choughs were recorded all along the south coast of England... Do you think we could get there again?! 😻🐦‍⬛🧡 (Map based on my research, from my #AtlasOfEarlyModernWildlife) x.com/cornishchoughs…

Ardea bennuides! The ancient Egyptians left us life size portrayals of this species of extinct heron in their art- apparently a sacred bird they called Bennu (popularly known as the Egyptian phoenix). Actual subfossil remains of it have been found in the Arabian penninsula!

Here's where you could get good 'sardines-on-toast' 250-500 years ago...🐟 Pilchards were most common in Cornwall (perhaps the Duchy's biggest industry). And in Munster, there was a connection between the pilchard fishery and international piracy! #AtlasofEarlyModernWildlife

Very excited to announce that I feature in this week's episode of THAT SHAKESPEARE LIFE podcast! Click the link to hear me bang on about what beavers meant* to people in Shakespearean England. #animalhistory #beavers #shakespeare (*And perhaps also what they didn't mean! 💅😉)

The halibut, a giant flatfish (upto 15ft!) caught in the northern seas in 🇬🇧+🇮🇪. It was possibly depleted in the North Sea by the beginning of the 20th century and is now endangered, but 250-500 years ago it apparently swam in the Thames estuary! 🙀💙 #AtlasofEarlyModernWildlife

After studying the Great Auk for 2 years for my senior thesis at Middlebury College, I am now going to Cambridge University’s Library to read the famous Garefowl Books by John Wolley (detailing interviews w/locals in Iceland in 1800s about the last Great Auk hunts) in person!!!

I love asking people to guess how big passenger pigeon flocks could get. 100,000 birds? A million? Try two billion. In 1860 one writer described a flock of birds a mile wide that took *14 hours* to pass overhead, packed so dense that it blocked the sun.

When people think of a sabertooth tiger they usually think of Smilodon. But the name was originally applied to Homotherium remains. It is kind of poetic that it would be Homotherium that would make history again by being the first Sabercat to reveal itself in the flesh to us! 🔥
