The last survivors of the Battle of Waterloo. Photographed 65 years after the battle at London’s Royal Hospital in Chelsea in June 1880. Amazingly, John McKay was born aboard HMS Victory in 1785.

Recent research on Stanley Baldwin and the abdication crisis led me down a rabbit hole of paraphernalia from George VI's coronation. The aesthetics were 💯.

‘We want Ted! We want Ted!’ On this day in 1970, Edward Heath became prime minister after defeating Harold Wilson’s Labour Party in the general election. Outside the front door of 10 Downing Street, the new prime minister spoke of his vision for the country. 👇🏻

If MPs have doubts about this Bill - and I struggle to see how they could not - they should vote against it. The lives of the vulnerable are too important to take a punt on a botched Bill.

I doubt we will ever truly hear about the harm that this Bill does, because the voices of the sick and the vulnerable are the least heard in society.

Just listened to this & it's genuinely hilarious as well as v interesting. Anne Kerr was truly a colourful character. Esp enjoyed the boozy ferry trip to France where they end up singing 'Rule Britannia' because they didn't know the words to the Marseillaise

If you don’t even try and understand why some people want to leave the ECHR, then you’ll never understand how to make good arguments for staying in it. This sort of thinking is the worst of the Brexit debates all over again.

‘Over the centuries, gentlemanliness came to be associated less with killing Frenchmen than with good manners, although of course there is no contradiction between the two.’ From Dominic Sandbrook’s Times column on the gentleman. Well worth reading.👇🏻 thetimes.com/article/ec2053…
