I was fortunate to have covered college basketball for a long time and went to 28 Final Fours. One of the joys of that annual trip was seeing a handful of the big-time sportswriters who were also wonderful people. John was in that group.

We all know what a great author and writer John was. He also happened to be one of the best adult age-group swimmers in the nation a couple of decades ago. We seeked out pools at those Final Fours and got in our workouts. I never tried to keep up with him.

He had shoulder surgery a while back and I’m not sure he swam after that. What’s funny is I can’t tell you the number of times in my life people have called me Feinstein. It even pops up on my phone’s autocorrect for my own freakin’ name.

After getting out of the hoops loop I hadn’t seen him in a while. But I always enjoyed our visits and his sense of humor and, of course, always reading John’s stuff. washingtonpost.com/obituaries/202…
