Neurons need mitochondria not only for making fuel to fire, but also for firing rate stabilization! Maxim @MaxKatsenelson, a brilliant PhD student in my lab, found that IGF1 receptor is crucial for firing rate homeostasis and it does so by regulating mitochondrial calcium.
