Heading south of 60’ latitude, means you’re on route to Antarctica. A near monochrome world awaits & with it, the prospect of being in the killer whale capital of the world. FPII Frozen South airs Sunday 2nd Oct 8pm BBC One & @bbciplayer #frozenplanetii #frozen #frozenplanet2

B1’s are undoubtedly the heavyweights of the killer whale world. Healthy adults positively ripple with blubber. However, they face challenging times. Their fragile pack ice habitat is under threat, due to rapidly rising temperatures across the Antarctic Peninsula. #frozenplanet2

Sometimes during the #FrozenPlanetii shoot, we observed animals in such thick pack ice, they were only able to breathe by spy hopping. In these cases, we never saw their dorsal fins for traditional photoID. That’s where their unique eye patches prove useful for IDing #frozen

Nice piece in the Times today by Adam Vaughan It provides some insight into the threats B1 killer whales face as a result of climate change and a hint of what’s to come in Sunday’s Frozen Planet II episode, ā€˜Frozen South’. #climate #FrozenPlanet2 thetimes.co.uk/article/killer…

Did someone say they saw a fin! Searching for small groups of B1 killer whales means all eyes on deck! The ā€˜pack ice’ killer whales can easily be masked from view by floes & bergs in the expansive ice fields. To miss a pod can mean days of searching before another sighting. #ice

During the Frozen Planet II expedition I was there to guide the team & provide insight into the behaviours we observed. It was fascinating to see firsthand the filming approaches used, including the gyro stabilised camera system GSS, operated by Jamie McPherson Stunning shots!

Weddell Seals. Is life a beach? What’s the theme of these images? A lack of ice floes. Why? Climate warming has led to glacial retreat exposing rocks & beaches that seals now haul out on. This may be catastrophic for Antarctica’s top predator the B1 killer whale. #ClimateAction

#ClimateAction A male B1 ā€˜pack ice’ killer whale rests in open water on a hot Antarctic summer day. With no pack ice habitat in sight & needing the energetic intake equivalent of a Weddell seal a day, this male & the whole B1 population face an uncertain future. #climatechange

With #FrozenPlanet2 it’s important to be open about where we are. And to recognise the changes on our planet we’ve caused. From that we can move forward to reducing our emissions and stopping the worst futures we can imagine

The final episode of #FrozenPlanet2 ends with messages from many of the excellent scientists featured stating clearly the implications of the changes they have observed and what needs to be done to achieve an effective transition to using zero carbon sources of energy.

A special hello from Antarctica to class P3/4 @StColumbasRCPS I am at the South Orkney Islands studying fin whales on this expedition. I hope you are all doing well up there in Cupar. Here are some wildlife images for you all. Any ideas what animals they are? Best wishes. Leigh
