Apparently #thicktrunktuesday is a thing, so here's one from #Lewisham village: The famous horse chestnut next to the old Roebuck on the High St (opposite St Stephen's church). Said to have stood from 1680s until the 1860s, shown here in an 1830s cyclopedia and c1850s painting.

Just added a 1959 map of the Lewisham market area - newly available via NLS Map Collections - to the recent blogpost on post-bombing rebuilding. Compared with the late 1940s map, it illustrates nicely the difference in reconstruction on the east and west sides:

Jubilee line's alleged 1970s Lewisham safeguarding debunked ➡️ ianvisits.co.uk/articles/jubil… Many years ago, I read somewhere that when the Jubilee line was planned in the 1970s, they made space for its tunnels to pass through Lewisham town centre.
